Ajay Singh Particle Swarm Optimization Approach for Distributed Generation Planning to Improve the Voltage Profile Margin

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 4.00, Kathmandu University (School of Engineering), course: Planning and Operation of Energy System, language: English, abstract: In power system, research area is widening and one is Distributed Generation (DG) integration in a distribution system. It restructures the power system and also helps in distribution system planning. This dissertation addresses the issue of voltage margin improvement by integrating DG unit and, therefore, this dissertation presents the model to enhance the candidate bus voltage of distribution system by optimal integration of DG units. The technical analysis is performed for radial distribution system (RDS).The proposed algorithm evaluates the base condition of loss and bus voltage and then generate populations of solutions at first stage. Optimization of DG unit size and locate the optimal bus can be done with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. The proposed paradigm works with the objective that minimize the active power loss under a constraint of voltage limit and DG size limit. Finally, the conclusion is that DG unit can locate optimally with optimized size to the distribution system for the voltage profile improvement of the buses and also the total loss of system is reduced. It is also concluded that the model can be used for any radial distribution systems.

In this study we have addressed the problems that have to do with the running of the power system and the optimization of generation. We have treated the control of active and reactive power in order to keep the system stable condition. The objective of the control strategy is to generate and transmit power to a system composed of interconnection lines, in the most economical and safe methodology possible, keeping the voltage and frequency within norms. Also we gave the results of the simulation via Matlab of the dependency of the generator's electric parameters of an aggregate in the Vau-Dejes hydropower-plant versus the temperature of winding and oil of a power transformer of this aggregate.

Venkata Swaroop Pappala Application of PSO for Optimization Power Systems under Uncertainty

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute of Electrical Power Systems), course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a black box optimization tool. The algorithm should be able to solve complex nonlinear, multimodal, discontinuous and mixed-integer power system optimization problems without any model reduction. Although there are many computational intelligence (CI) basedalgorithms which can handle these problems, they require intense human intervention in the form of parameter tuning, selection of a suitable algorithm for a given problem etc. The idea here is to develop an algorithm that works relatively well on a variety of problems with minimum human effort. The most significant optimization task in the power system operation is the scheduling of various generation resources (Unit Commitment, UC). The current practice used in UC modelling is the binary approach. This modelling results in a high dimension problem. This in turn leads to increased computational effort anddecreased efficiency of the algorithm. A duty cycle based modelling proposed in this thesis results in 80 percent reduction in the problem dimension. The stern uptime and downtime requirements are also included in the modelling. Therefore, the search process mostly starts in a feasible solution space. From the investigations on a benchmark problem...

Umakanta Sahoo A Polygeneration Process Concept for Hybrid Solar and Biomass Power Plant. Simulation, Modelling, Optimization

The global warming phenomenon as a significant sustainability issue is gaining worldwide support for development of renewable energy technologies. The term “polygeneration” is referred to as “an energy supply system, which delivers more than one form of energy to the final user.” For example, electricity, cooling and desalination can be delivered from a polygeneration process. The polygeneration process in a hybrid solar thermal power plant can deliver electricity with less impact on the environment compared to a conventional fossil fuel-based power generating system. It is also THE next generation energy production technique with the potential to overcome the undesirable intermittence of renewable energy systems. In this study, the polygeneration process simultaneous production of power, vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) cooling and multi-effect humidification and dehumidification (MEHD) desalination system from different heat sources in hybrid solar-biomass (HSB) system with higher energy efficiencies (energy and exergy), primary energy savings (PES) and payback period are investigated, focusing on several aspects associated with hybrid solar-biomass power generation installations, such as wide availability of biomass resources and solar direct normal irradiance (DNI), and other technologies. Thermodynamic evaluation (energy and exergy) of HSB power has also been investigated, along with the VAR cooling system, the modelling, simulation, optimization and cost analysis of the polygeneration hybrid solar biomass system, all accompanied by multiple case studies and examples for practical applications. This volume provides the researcher, student and engineer with the intellectual tool needed for understanding new ideas in this rapidly emerging field. The book is also intended to serve as a general source and reference book for the professional (consultant, designer, contractor etc.) who is working in the field of solar thermal, biomass, power plant, polygeneration, cooling and process heat. It is a must-have for anyone working in this field.

Karimi Mazaher, Mokhlis Hazlie Under-Frequency Load Shedding Scheme for Islanded Distribution Network

Abnormal conditions such as overload and generator tripping usually result in large excursion of power system frequency, voltage and other system variables. In this case, an effective method to prevent the electric power system from instability, frequency collapse and blackout is an under-frequency load shedding scheme. It is applied in order to maintain stability of the system, when the power system generation fails to supply the increase of load. Load shedding is a common technique to maintain the power system stability by curtailment of partial load in some part of the system. However, the load shedding techniques for an islanded distribution network should be treated differently from the transmission power system. A particular approach of under-frequency load shedding scheme is required for an islanded system which is known to be not as strong as the grid.

Behavior of a transmission system upon the addition of compensating devices is also studied. The changes in the behavior of the compensators for a change in their parameter values are then obtained and the best rating of compensators to deliver optimum results is found out. The simulation results demonstrate the improvement in the performance of the system for each of the above FACTS controller in terms of power profile and voltage stability. The results are then compared to determine the best controller for a given operating condition.

Huang Power and Thermal-Aware Scheduling for Real-time Computing Systems

We have been enjoying tremendous benefits thanks to the revolutionary advancement of computing systems, driven by the remarkable semiconductor technology scaling and the advanced processor architecture. However, the exponentially increased transistor density has directly led to increased power consumption and elevated system temperature. The power and thermal issues have posed enormous challenges and threaten to slow down the continuous evolvement of computer technology. Effective power/thermal-aware design techniques are urgently demanded at all design abstraction levels. In this book, we present our research efforts to employ real-time scheduling techniques to solve the resource-constrained power/thermal-aware, design-optimization problems. The novelty of this work is that we integrate the cutting-edge research on power and thermal at the circuit and architectural-level into a set of accurate yet simplified system-level models, and are able to conduct system-level analysis and design based on these models. The theoretical study in this work serves as a solid foundation for the guidance of the power/thermal-aware scheduling algorithms development in practical computing systems.
